LINCOLN COUNTY, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - A man is facing multiple charges after deputies said he kidnapped a Lincoln County woman Friday night and caused her to "fear for her life."
The incident began around 11:30 p.m. Friday, June 29 when deputies were called to Car Farm Road in Lincolnton after a woman told a friend to call 911 if she wasn't back from picking up her belongings at a home on Sherrill Farm Road.
The 911 caller tried to follow a car driven by Coral Smalt and passenger, William James Vanzile, 34, after Smalt went to the home to pick up her belongings. Vanzile convinced her to take him to a nearby convenience store before he left.
The pair got into an argument at the convenience store and left. Deputies said a short distance away the woman was forced to stop and Vanzile got into the driver's seat. As they drove through several neighborhoods Smalt said she wanted to drive and Vanzile allowed her.
Smalt later told deputies that she feared for her life and wanted to get out of the car but Vanzile would not let her. The 911 caller following the pair eventually lost sight of them on Shuford Road. Luckily, the vehicle was spotted later on Car farm Road and stopped by deputies.
Vanzile was taken into custody and later had a clear plastic bag drop from his shorts. He confirmed the drugs were methamphetamine.
Vanzile is charged with one felony count each of second-degree kidnapping, possession of methamphetamine, one misdemeanor count each of possession of a controlled substance, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was given a $26,500 secured bond.
