Man accused of murder in Steele Creek area arrested in Greensboro

- Police arrested a man Friday who was wanted in connection to the murder of his girlfriend. Her body was found earlier this week inside her Steele Creek townhouse, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say.

Leroy "Jay" Anthony Cooper III, 41, is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Jennifer Renee Smith, 34.

CMPD said earlier on Friday their Violent Criminal Apprehension Team coordinated with the Greensboro Police Department who located and arrested Cooper without incident. Cooper will be transported back to Charlotte where he will be interviewed by homicide detectives.

Cooper will then be transported to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office. CMPD said they would like to thank the Greensboro Police Department for their partnership and assistance in this case.

At 2:25 p.m. Wednesday, April 5, CMPD officers were called to the 23000 block of Verdant Court for a welfare check. Upon arrival, officers found Smith inside the home. Medic responded and pronounced her dead on scene.

During the investigation it was determined that Smith and Cooper were involved in a relationship.

This is an ongoing, active investigation.
