Man bought teen from Guatemala, made her his slave, police say

- A Morganton man is facing new charges after authorities say he bought a teenage girl from Guatemala and made her his slave.

Pasqual Mendez, 23, bought the teen from a family member of the victim and forced her to cook and clean and have sex with him, according to an arrest report filed with the Morganton Police Department

Police responded to Mendez’s home on May 26 after receiving a 911 call about an assault.  Investigators said the teen was brought from Guatemala about seven months ago. Mendez paid the family member of the victim to bring her from Guatemala and for ownership of her, according to the report.

On May 26, Mendez was charged with assault on a female, interfering with emergency communication and statutory rape of a child less than 15 years of age. On Wednesday, police also charged Mendez with human trafficking a child victim.

His next court date is scheduled for Aug. 31.

No one else has been charged in the case. Police said their investigation is ongoing.

The teen is in the care of the Burke County Department of Social Services and the Burke County Child Advocacy Center, according to police.
