CLOVER, SC (WJZY) - If you find it hard to believe that anyone would try to sell illegal drugs on craigslist, imagine how the cops felt!
"We got a tip from another officer at the agency who was at home looking on craigslist and came across and ad saying 'I sell weed'. We found it hard to believe and when we got to work the next day we pulled it up and couldn't believe someone would post this on craigslist and thought it could be a hoax," said Lt. Mike Ligon with the York County Drug Enforcement Unit.
But, it was true. A Clover man, James Kinley, even had his picture and phone number on the ad.
"They texted him and within a minute, he actually called them back on the phone. They set up a drug deal with this guy for marijuana. We thought there was no way anyone would show up. But low and behold, at the place and time he set up, he was there," said Ligon.
The undercover drug deal went down at a gas station in Clover which is less than a mile away from Larne Elementary School.
"Marijuana has always been considered a gateway drug. I think you're always going to have marijuana. Whether the kids are starting out in junior high or high school experimenting, it's the first in a long list of horrible things people get into," Ligon said.
When that happens, police said, marijuana becomes an introduction to the harder stuff.
"We're having a huge problem with meth and heroin. People go into jail, spend time there, detox, then they go out and take the same dose of heroin they were taking before they went in and it kills them," said Ligon.
