Man charged in connection to gas station shootout where bullet hit school bus

Twenty-seven year-old Nelson Handy, III was arrested and charged for his involvement in the case, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police. 

The shooting happened just before 8:00 a.m. near Parkwood and The Plaza in east Charlotte. Police say two people were shooting at each other when one of those rounds hit a school bus, belonging to Charlotte Lab School. Nineteen students were on board. Police said the school bus was not the target.

Another round struck a second vehicle and damaged the car, but the driver was not injured, police said.

The entire incident was captured on the gas station's surveillance camera.

Officers say they received a tip that identified Handy as one of the shooters and the driver of the Dodge Charger involved. He was arrested Friday after a brief chase with police when he failed to pull over for a traffic stop.

Handy was charged with Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Driving While License Revoked, Reckless Driving, Failing to Heed Emergency Light and Fleeing to Elude Law Enforcement, and transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.  

Detectives have additionally obtained twenty warrants for Shooting Into Occupied Property, which will be served on him by the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office. 

Police are currently searching for the other suspect involved. This remains an ongoing, active investigation.  As further information develops it will be released by CMPD Public Affairs.
