Man charged in SE Charlotte sexual assault case

- A man has been arrested in connection to a sexual assault case from mid-June according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police.

Malcolm Xavier Mitchell, 25, has been charged with kidnapping, attempted armed robbery, three counts of first degree sex offense, and first degree attempted sex offense.

Just before midnight on June 18, CMPD responded to a 911 call in the 6800 block of Monroe Rd. According to the victim, Mitchell approached her as she was walking down Wallace Rd. towards a bus stop after getting off of work. Mitchell pulled out a gun and forced the victim behind a building where he proceeded to sexually assault her.

Mitchell eventually let her go and she immediately called 911. Officers and K-9 units canvassed the area, but were unable to locate Mitchell at the time.

On June 27, a CMPD officer noticed a car that matched the description of the suspect vehicle. He performed a traffic stop, identified the driver as Mitchell and arrested him for a traffic violation. Thanks to the information and evidence gathered during the traffic stop detectives were able to confirm Mitchell as the suspect in the sexual assault case.

On Wednesday, Mitchell was arrested for his crimes. He is in custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Department.

Detectives are asking anyone with additional information concerning this case to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
