Man charged with murder in 2004 cold case

- Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police have arrested a suspect involved in a murder that happened on July 4, 2004.

On Sunday, July 4, 2004 officers responded to the 1400 block of Delane Avenue in reference to locating the vehicle of a missing woman. When officers arrived they found Mai Edwina Cooper inside the trunk of the vehicle, according to police.

Detectives were led to Anthony Aikens as a person of interest after investigating.

Detectives say Aikens had met with the victim on June 23, 2004 and Cooper had not been seen since.

Detectives interviewed Aikens, but did not have enough evidence to make an arrest and Aikens fled to NYC shortly after the interview.

The evidence was submitted to the FBI and Aikens was confirmed the suspect, according to detectives.

On July 21, 2016 detectives with the cold case unit traveled to Orleans Correctional Facility in NYC where they re-interviewed Aiken who was being held for an unrelated first-degree manslaughter charged.

Aiken was charged with the murder and kidnapping of Cooper, according to detectives.

The CMPD Cold Case Unit has reviewed 158 cases since it began in 2008.  Of those cases, 39 have been cleared and 28 of those were cleared by arrest.
