SALISBURY, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - A person died Saturday after falling into an empty industrial tank at AkzoNobel in Salisbury, according to a company spokesperson.
Around 4 a.m. an employee working at the surface chemistry facility fell into the open tank during a loading operation. Co-workers immediately called 911, and when authorities arrived on scene and entered the tank, they discovered the employee was dead.
The Salisbury location produces polymers that are used in everyday personal care products, according to the company spokesperson. Production at the site has been suspended while authorities investigate. The name of the employee has not been released at this time.
"We are terribly saddened by this loss and our thoughts and prayers are with the employee's family and the rest of the employees at our site in Salisbury," the spokesperson said.
