CHARLOTTE, N.C. (FOX 46 CHARLOTTE) - A man died at the hospital following a four-car crash in east Charlotte. Police say the victim may have been under the influence of alcohol.
Just before 10:00 p.m. on Friday Dec. 7, officers responded to the 7500 block of Idlewild Rd. where the four vehicles collided. Upon arrival, officers found a 2002 Honda Civic, a 2002 Ford Taurus, a 2009 Chevrolet Express Van and a 2018 Chevrolet Cruz.
An investigation into the incident revealed that the Civic, driven by Vongsanith Prahongchanh, was traveling west on Idlewild Road toward Independence Blvd. when he swerved to the right to avoid hitting a Taurus which was stopped in front of him, waiting to make a left turn onto Ware Rd.
Prahongchanh vehicle struck the back right corner of the Taurus and continued going west on Idlewild Rd. As he approached Idlebrook Dr., he crossed over the double yellow line into the path of the Chevrolet van, resulting in a head-on collision.
Prahongchanh’s Civic was spun back onto the right side of Idlewild Rd. where it was then hit by the Chevy Cruz. After the impact with Prahongchanh’s car, the Cruz ran off the right side of the roadway and hit a telephone pole.
The driver and passenger of the Taurus were taken to the hospital by Medic with non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the Chevrolet Van and the Cruz were not taken to the hospital.
Prahongchanh, was brought to Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center-Main by Medic where he later passed away from injuries sustained in the crash.
Alcohol use by Prahongchanh is suspected to be a contributing factor in this crash.
Police are continuing to investigate. Any witnesses are asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600 or Officer Chuck Jamieson at 704-432-2169.
