Man dies in crash after chase in Cabarrus County

- A man is dead after leading officers on a high-speed chase that ended in Cabarrus County when he crashed his vehicle, police said. 

According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police, who are assisting the Cabarrus County Sheriff's Office with the investigation, a man drove away from a residence at about 1:45 p.m.

As the suspect was driving away, a deputy tried to conduct a traffic stop. That's when the man took off at a high rte of speed and the deputy lost sight of the vehicle, police said. 

The vehicle was later found crashed into a tree on the side of the road on Flowes Store Road near Sam Black Road in Cabarrus County. The man was pronounced dead on scene.

After the crash occurred, the vehicle was searched and police said a trafficking amount of cocaine was located inside the car.

The driver's identity has not been released.
