IREDELL COUNTY, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - A Mooresville man is facing multiple charges after deputies said he struck a woman and her child with his car while fleeing the scene of an accident last week.
Omar Anthony Coleman, 22, who already had outstanding warrants, reportedly got into a minor car accident with another vehicle on Thursday, Aug. 30 on the northbound entrance ramp of Langtree Road at Interstate-77.
As the woman in the second vehicle tried to call 911 to report the accident, Coleman asked her to not call the police because of his outstanding warrants. The woman refused and Coleman assaulted her and took her cell phone, deputies said.
Coleman was able to get back into his vehicle with the woman's cell phone. Several witnesses stopped to help the woman and tried to block Coleman's car, however, he put the vehicle in reverse and moved with the woman still partially in his driver's door.
Witnesses said the woman's 7-year-old son got out of the vehicle and ran toward his mother. Both were struck by Coleman's car as he drove away. They were treated on scene for minor injuries.
Coleman was located minutes later on Bridges Farm Road near Mooresville and arrested. He has been charged with three counts of assault with a deadly weapon, common law robbery and interfering with 911 communications. He was also served with an outstanding warrant for failure to appear on a drug possession charge.
