CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - One of the men involved in a shooting in east Charlotte where a school bus was hit while students were on board is due in court on Friday.
Nelson Handy III, 27, was arrested and charged earlier this month for his involvement in the case, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.
The shooting happened just before 8:00 a.m. near Parkwood and The Plaza. Police said two people were shooting at each other when one of those rounds hit a school bus, belonging to Charlotte Lab School. Nineteen students were on board. Police said the school bus was not the target.
Another round struck a second vehicle and damaged the car, but the driver was not injured, police said. The entire incident was captured on the gas station's surveillance camera. Handy was arrested after a brief chase with police when he failed to pull over for a traffic stop.
Handy has been charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, driving while license revoked, reckless driving, failing to heed emergency light and fleeing to elude law enforcement. Handy has also been additionally charged with shooting into an occupied property.
