Man kidnaps woman, 3-year-old at gunpoint ahead of police chase in Statesville

- A man kidnapped a woman and her 3-year-old daughter at gunpoint before leading deputies on a chase through downtown Statesville, according to the Iredell County Sheriff's Office.

The incident began Wednesday, October 3 on Eastway Drive at East Broad Street.

Deputies said a woman called 911 stating someone had shot at her and was following her in another vehicle. She described the suspect and the vehicle and explained that the man was hanging out the window of his car, pointing a firearm at her while she was driving.

Deputies along with officers from the Statesville Police Department responded. The suspect and the victim were spotted at the intersection of East Broad Street and Brierwood Road.

The woman and her 3-year-old daughter stopped when she saw law enforcement and they were taken into custody safely, while other deputies continued to pursue the suspect.

The suspect, later identified as Tyrell Montice Tate, 28, turned back onto East Broad Street and continued through congested downtown Statesville before crashing into a retaining wall in front of Mitchell Community College. He was then taken into custody.

While clearing the vehicle to determine if any other people were inside, a 9mm handgun was located along with a small amount of cocaine, deputies said.

A data search of the handgun indicated the weapon was stolen out of Mooresville.

The victim told police she was at 1102 King Street when the suspect, Tate, fired a handgun, assaulted, and kidnapped her and her daughter before they were able to get away. The woman told deputies Tate shot at her as she and her daughter fled.

Tate is facing multiple charges including felony second-degree kidnapping, felony assault by strangulation, assault with a deadly weapon, possession of cocaine, and felony possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Additional charges are expected by Statesville police.

Tate is being held at the Iredell County Jail on $300,000 secured bond.
