MAIDEN, NC (FOX 46) - A man says he was held at gunpoint and attacked with a knife after a police officer discovered him lying and bleeding profusely on the road Monday.
According to Maiden police, an officer found the victim lying beside his own parked SUV Range Rover on a cul-de-sac in Maiden about 11:53 a.m. Monday, May 8.
"I think the officer did save his life, he had been lying there for some period of time. I'm not sure how long, maybe more than an hour, had lost a significant quantity of blood, and it's not particularly likely that someone would have come over and immediately discovered him," Captain Jamey Fletcher.
The man was treated by emergency services and airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center-Main where he underwent surgery for life threatening injuries.
"I'm not sure how much longer he would have survived with the bleeding that was going on," Fletcher said.
The man told police that he had been abducted at gunpoint just off Interstate-40 near the Catawba/Iredell County line. Police believe the man may have gotten tired from his two-hour commute to work from Greensboro to Bessemer City, so he may have pulled to the side of the road to take a break, when the suspects kidnapped him.
The victim said the suspects took his laptop computer and a small amount of cash and then got into his car and instructed him to drive to certain locations while holding him at gunpoint.
The suspects eventually ordered the victim to stop at the Maiden location, where they reportedly attacked him with a knife.
The suspects are described as white males in their late 20s to early 30s. One has a medium build, reddish blond hair and the other with dark hair.
"It's an unusual investigation for us, we're a small community. Right now, we have a very specific story coming from the victim and that's what we're working," Fletcher said.
