Manhunt in western North Carolina after police K-9 shot, killed

- The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is assisting the Yancey County Sheriff's Office is searching for the person responsible for shooting and killing a K-9 officer. 

8-year-old K-9 Officer Chris was shot Wednesday morning at his deputy's home in the Bald Mtn. community of Yancey County, authorities said. 

K-9 Chris later passed away due to his injuries at Reach Animal Hospital in Asheville. Deputies believe the incident happened between 8:30 p.m. and 5:20 a.m. on July 12. 

"Chris was a beloved member of the Yancey County Sheriff’s Office for the past 7 years. The Yancey County Sheriff’s Office is offering a $2,800 award that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons involved," the sheriff's office posted on Facebook Thursday morning. 

Several people reached out on Facebook wanting to show their support by making a donation towards the K-9 program. If you wish to contribute to the reward money of to the K-9 program, checks may be mailed to PO Box 6, Burnsville, NC 28714. 

A memorial service will be held for K-9 Officer Chris on Thursday, July 20 at 2 p.m. at the auditorium of Mountain Heritage High School.
