GRANITE FALLS, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - A huge fire has engulfed the old Shuford Mills in Caldwell County. Firefighters are expected to be battling the flames overnight.
Several fire units have been called in as crews work to put out the blaze that broke out around 7:15p.m. Friday evening. Plumes of smoke could be seen from miles away as the fire spread throughout the building.
All 16 fire departments in Caldwell County and several from Catawba and Burke Counties came to try to put out the Granite Falls warehouse fire.
Crews on scene say that the fire has not spread to surrounding buildings at this time. The building is completely consumed by the flames, but the fire is now 35 percent contained, according to reports.
Granite Falls Town Manager, Jerry Church, evacuated 12-15 homes in the vicinity of the fire due to the heat when it first broke out. The mandatory evacuation has since been lifted and residents can return to those homes.
According to officials, the warehouse was being rented out for storage units. The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.
The Granite Falls Recreation Center, Drug Center and Town Offices have been opened to serve as cooling centers for firefighters. The American Red Cross will be setting up additional rehab centers for fire crews.
