Matthews task force still looking at new school district

- The Matthews Task Force on Education is still exploiting new education options for local students -- including leaving Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools all together.

The task force was created by mayor Jim Taylor after the possibility of some CMS students being bussed outside of their neighborhood schools.

The CMS Board of Education has now drafted a plan to keep neighborhood schools in tact -- but the task force said it's still moving forward with looking into new options at a meeting on Monday.

"We seem to cyclically come back to the same thing every couple of years so I think it's probably not in our best interest to just abandon our thoughts," mayor Taylor said.

Taylor added he is concerned the CMS Board of Ed has not prioritized their goals for student assignment. It is uncertain where neighborhood schools rank.

"It's clear to me that there is no prioritization," Taylor added.

Splitting from CMS would require action from the N.C. General Assembly.

The task force is looking to host a public forum in the upcoming months.
