CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - A mother in east Charlotte experienced terrifying moments when a man tried to steal her car and kidnap her child.
CMPD has arrested Brandon Jones Crandell ,24, and charged him with robbery and two counts of kidnapping. The mother who asked FOX 46 to not share her name explained exactly how she fought to save her family.
“I don’t know if he wanted the car, I don’t know what he's going to do,” said the mother. “Because he telling me to get the F out and I got my baby in the back."
On Wednesday around 8 p.m. her husband ran inside a convenience store to buy a lottery ticket. They left the car running outside the BP gas station on East W.T. Harris Blvd. with the doors unlocked because it was cold outside.
“When he jumped in he hold the steering wheel like and put the car in reverse and I hold on my door and when I look around he's like 'get the F out, get the F out!'”
A man they did not know jumped inside and started driving away. She started fighting for her life.
“The only thing I could do I just hold him by his neck with my right hand. Then he started wrestling and the car was kinda moving and I go like that!”
Witnesses outside the gas station joined the fight, pinning the attacker to the ground until police arrived on scene.
“And he tried to run and they started stomping him and I said don’t try!”
The mother had one question for her attacker: “And I said 'what were you gonna do with me and my baby?'”
She has some advice for other parents alone at night: “I say to any mom anyone who has kids always be on the lookout.”
She says if her child wasn’t with her she may have froze, but kept fighting to save her 5-year-old and herself.
“I didn’t give up and I thank God because he gave me the power!”
