CHARLOTTE, N.C. (FOX 46 CHARLOTTE) - Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police have identified a motorcyclist who was killed Wednesday afternoon in a single-vehicle crash in north Charlotte.
The wreck happened at 4:09 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16 in the 1300 block of Ridge Road.
As officers arrived on scene they located a man, identified as Phillip Allen Reed, 65, dead at the scene. His burgundy Harley Davidson motorcycle was found off the road, police said.
Witnesses on scene told CMPD the motorcycle was traveling around a curve heading southeast on Ridge Road at a high rate of speed. The rider failed to negotiate the curve and traveled left of center into the opposite lane of travel.
After crossing the center line, Reed reportedly applied his brakes, skidded, and laid the motorcycle down. He was subsequently ejected off of the motorcycle and struck a guardrail.
Excessive speed is suspected to be a contributing factor in this crash, police said. This remains an ongoing, active investigation.
