Mount Holly doctor's license suspended following allegations of sexual misconduct

- A Mount Holly doctor who stands accused of sexual misconduct has had his license suspended.

Dr. Michael Smith, of Mt. Holly Family Practice, closed his doors for good leaving many of his patients scrambling.

"I’m pregnant and I had an opioid addiction that he was treating me for. My appointment was for tomorrow and I come in and I find out his office was being shut down. I wasn't even informed," former patient Jessica Webber said.

Documents filed by the North Carolina Medical Board said "on at least two occasions, Dr. Smith, engaged in sexual acts, sexual contact and/or vaginal intercourse with patients in an examination room at his practice."

The allegations of sexual misconduct against Dr. Smith come from two patients he was treating for multiple medical conditions.

Records show one of the patients was being treated for “chronic pain, depressive disorder, and schizoaffective disorder, bipolar type.” The other for "anxiety disorder, opioid dependence, and drug dependence.”

According to the documents, the first patient said she visited Dr. Smith in August and “Dr. Smith, by force or coercion, engaged in a sexual act and had sexual contact" with her.

The second patient visited Dr. Smith in September 2017. There the document state “Dr. Smith engaged in vaginal intercourse with Patient B in an examination room.”

Many of his patients were shocked to hear about the allegations.

"He's never touched me or all he ever did with me was go for my breathing. He checked my breathing. He was always a good doctor," Webber said.

"He's been good to me. I suffered from breast cancer in June and I ran out of sick time and vacation time and no other employer would pay me to do that. He paid me and kept my insurance going for me," Dr. Smith’s Office Manager Shannon Van Dyke said.

Patients tell FOX 46 he has sent out letters saying he planned on retiring in December.
