Police hunt for suspected killer of north Charlotte couple

- UPDATE: CMPD has confirmed the man found in the trunk of the vehicle that was driven to the hospital is Rufus Gordon, 69. Gordon was the father of the young woman and husband of Jacqueline Gordon White.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is actively searching for a man connected to the deaths of two people at a residence in north Charlotte.

Officers said the suspect, Vernal Smith Jr., is accused of killing Jacqueline Gordon White, 65, inside the home and believed her husband, Rufus Gordon, was in grave danger.

CMPD was called to the 900 block of Red Clay Lane at 4:40 a.m. Thursday, July 27 after another woman who was inside the home showed up at the hospital bleeding from the head, claiming 'foul play' at the house.

CMPD said this woman remains at CMC-Main for treatment.

Upon arrival, CMPD officers found Jacqueline Gordon White inside the home. She was pronounced dead on scene.

CMPD said sometime Thursday morning, they located a deceased man in the trunk of the vehicle driven to the hospital by the young woman. Detectives said they're working to identify the man. No word yet if the body has been officially identified as Rufus Gordon. However, they said "the search for him is now over."

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police believe Smith Jr. to be driving a black 2017 Honda CRV with NC plate PAS-9116. Anyone who sees the suspect or suspect vehicle is asked to immediately call 911.

This incident marks the 51st homicide of 2017.
