NC to study extending SC's Carolina Bays Parkway

CALABASH, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina officials are asking an engineering firm to study extending the Carolina Bays Parkway from South Carolina into Brunswick County.

The parkway starts south of Myrtle Beach and run the length of the Grand Strand allowing traffic to bypass the beach congestion. But it ends a few miles before the North Carolina border.

So the North Carolina Department of Transportation told the StarNews of Wilmington it wants to complete an environmental review of extending the parkway.

The DOT says the extension would alleviate traffic congestion on U.S. Highway 17 in southern Brunswick County.

After the environmental study, the $202 million to $280 million project will be reviewed by the state to see if it will be built.
