Neighbors in Matthews voice concerns over proposed rezoning project

- Matthews City Commissioners listened to public comment about a proposed rezoning project that’s been stirring up controversy.

Residents took their opportunity to express their concerns to commissioners, causing the meeting to last several hours. The developer also pled his case.

The project would allow a developer to build more homes in a downtown neighborhood that many say is historic, and they’re concerned about the project changing the atmosphere. The developer wants to build about a dozen homes on a short stretch of South Trade St.

Some of the concerns that were voiced involved additional traffic on this compact roadway, that it may be too close to the greenway access, and will take out too many trees.

A vote from the commissioners regarding if they will rezone the property to allow for upcoming residential construction is expected in a few weeks.
