CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - CMPD says a missing man’s body was discovered in the woods near the back of an east Charlotte apartment complex.
FOX 46 spoke to a woman who lives in the area. She said residents had no idea someone was even missing in the area.
CMPD says 24-year-old Peter "Cody" Vongsaly was last seen on March 28. More than two weeks later his body was found in a patch of woods at woodland estates apartment homes.
"It's so sad that someone so young would be missing and found dead,” said local resident Mary Ricci.
A CMPD flyer says he was last seen coming out of an apartment in the 6000 of Balsam Fir Dr. The crime scene search unit and the missing persons unit were searching that area when a cadaver dog located his body.
"I didn't even know that there was someone missing in this area. I didn't realize that it was pretty much in my backyard because I live in the next apartment complex and I'm like freaking out,” said Ricci.
She was devastated when she learned what happened.
"I think that they should've notified people and everybody would have went out looking for him and they probably would've found him sooner."
Police say the cause of death is still under investigation. Ricci says she's going to be a little on edge until police find out what happened and who's responsible.
"I can't even imagine one of my children being missing, let alone dying and for so long. It just breaks my heart really,” she said.
The case remains an open and active investigation. Police are asking anyone with information on his disappearance to call Crimestoppers.
