DURHAM, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - More than 16 years ago, novelist Michael Peterson called the Durham Police Department, saying that his wife had an accident and was dead after falling down the stairs in their home.
Peterson was subsequently charged with the Dec. 9, 2001 murder of his wife, Kathleen Peterson.
A Peabody Award-winning series, The Staircase, followed the murder trial, taking viewers through the chaotic case in an eight-episode documentary.
The trial led to Peterson’s conviction, but it didn't end there. In 2011, Peterson was granted a new trial after SBI blood analyst Duane Deaver gave "materially misleading" testimony and had exaggerated his training and expertise.
The new trial was scheduled to begin in 2017. However in Feb. 2017, Peterson submitted an Alford plea to the reduced charge of manslaughter. He was sentenced to time already served and freed.
Peterson is listed as a felon.
Now, Netflix is bringing back the series, The Staircase, with three new additional episodes, showcasing an expansive look at a two-decade search for truth and justice.
