CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - It’s something many of us take for granted: the bed we sleep in. The sad reality is there are children across the Carolinas who sleep on the floor each night.
“There’s a need,” said Daniil Grinchak explained outside of a South Charlotte storage unit.
The 10x20 storage unit houses the supplies to build bunk beds for children ages 3-17.
Inspired by a video about the organization Sleep in Heavenly Peace, Grinchak and his wife prayed about it and decided to start a chapter in Indian Trail. He’s not a carpenter but knows how to build bunk beds. He works full time with Movement Mortgage. This latest endeavor is a labor of love.
“They are surprised. Most of the people I interact with their kids have beds. There are a lot of people who are willing to help those kids who sleep on the floor,” explained Grinchak.
In May, the Grinchaks started a local chapter of the non-profit that is committed to making sure no child sleeps on the floor. Through sponsored build days, beds are already finding homes across Charlotte.
“The kids are gracious. They are happy and you can see it in their eyes,” he said. “One thing we need is twin size bedding. We have mattresses but we need the pillows and a storage unit that won’t cost us a bed a month,” added Grinchak who is paying for storage space.
It’s hard to know the exact need but Grinchak says it’s likely great which is why they will continue to build beds.
“With every day we see the need and churches, companies and organizations are stepping up saying they want to help,” Grinchak said.
Companies can sponsor beds and building days. The non-profit will bring the supplies to your location making the build day convenient. No previous building experience is needed.
