LENOIR, NC (WJZY) - Police were called out to a Walmart Tuesday morning after an officer-involved shooting took place where a suspect was shot and killed, according to police.
Officers with the Lenoir Police Department were called out to Blowing Rock Blvd. at 8:23 a.m. in regards to suspicious activity reported by employees.
When officers arrived they came in contact with Carl Nivens, Natasha Stanley and Jose Flores.
When they approached, they say Nivens tried to run from them. One officer followed Nivens while another remained at the entrance/exit. As Nivens approached the exit, authorities say he drew a .38 caliber revolver from his waist band, turned toward the officer while running and fired at least one shot.
At that point Nivens and the officer started struggling and that’s when the other officer returned fire and struck Nivens, according to authorities.
Nivens was pronounced dead at the scene.
Other than minor injuries from the physical struggle, no officers were hurt and no other injuries were reported.
Both Stanley and Flores have been arrested on outstanding warrants from Burke County on unrelated charges: Stanley for Failure to Appear on Nonsupport and Flores for Felony Possession of a Firearm by Convicted Felon.
Further charges related to this incident are expected.
