One killed in crash involving unmarked police car in Cabarrus County

- One person was killed in a multi-vehicle wreck involving an unmarked police car Monday morning in Cabarrus County, according to NC Highway Patrol.

Troopers said a tractor trailer was heading north on Old Concord Road when a 2013 Ford F-150 turned onto Old Concord Road from Irish Potato Road, into the path of the tractor trailer. Investigators say the driver of the pick-up, 18-year-old Brian Frederick Manning, failed to yield to the truck when he should have.

A third vehicle, driven by off-duty Huntersville police officer Ryan Wesley Smith, 32, was traveling behind the tractor trailer. During the wreck, the tractor trailer pushed the Ford F-150 into the officer's unmarked 2010 Ford Fusion.

The driver of the tractor trailer, Walter Lee Fink, 60, and Officer Smith were both transported to CMC Northeast with minor injuries. Manning was pronounced dead on scene.

Investigators say speed does not appear to be a factor in the accident, and Manning was wearing a seat belt.
