Charlotte, NC - Hundreds laced up their skates and hit the rink for opening night of Holiday on the Ice. The 12th annual event draws people from not only the Charlotte area, but from out-of-state as well to the NASCAR Hall of Fame, and is often a seasonal tradition among families.
“Families who come year after year, they love it,” said Rachel Ferebee, Promotions Manager at WBT Radio said. “It’s something that you just don’t expect to see here in the southeast. It’s really unbelievable.”
Organizers from WBT Radio and 107.9 FM prepare the rink two weeks in advance, filling it with water and freezing it using an underground pipe system.
“As a couple, we just come here to have fun,” said Blake Washburn about he and his girlfriend, both of Huntersville.
The rink is open to the public Wednesday-Friday: 5pm-10pm, Saturday: 10am-10pm and Sunday: 10am-7pm and will have extended hours starting December 16th and will remain open until January 3rd.
“It’s really about seeing people enjoying it, people laughing, people smiling,” said Ferebee.
