Panthers fan dies after being hit by car at Sunday game

- A Panthers fan was killed after being struck by a SUV Sunday afternoon, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police.

Around 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 25, on-duty officers along with off-duty officers working the Panthers' game were called to the 400 block of W. Morehead St. in reference to a woman hit by a car.

Fire & Medic responded to the scene and took the pedestrian, identified as Diane Babinec, to Atrium Health with life-threatening injuries.

The preliminary investigation indicated that the woman was crossing W. Morehead Street, walking several feet behind her husband, when she was hit by a 2012 Chevrolet SUV traveling east in the left hand lane.

The driver of the Chevy, 19-year-old Brooklyn Nicole Kogod, was not impaired, and officers said speed did not appear to be a factor in this case. Alcohol use by Babinec is unknown at this time.

At 12:21 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 26, Babinec succumbed to her injuries sustained in the crash. She was pronounced deceased at Atrium Health. Her next of kin has been notified.

This crash remains under investigation by the Major Crash Investigation Unit. Any witnesses to the crash or with more information are asked to call Crime Stoppers at (704) 334-1600 or Officer M.R. Pressley at (704) 432-2169.
