Parents of high school athletes respond to national anthem protest

- Fox 46 Charlotte wanted to see if high school athletes were participating in the national protests of kneeling during the national anthem.

This comes after professional athletes have started taking a knee during the start of games.

During the Thursday night Independence vs East Mecklenburg game we did not observe any players absent or choosing not to participate in the national anthem that kick offed the game.

However, some parents told Fox 46 Charlotte, they wouldn’t be surprised if local high school athletes started participating in the movement.

Craig Campbell has a son who plays for East Mecklenburg. He said his son and other kids his age are aware of the meaning of the protests happening nationally. Campbell believes any high school athlete who’d want to participate should be able to.

“Well I would support him either way, simply because he's big enough to make his own decision,” Campbell said.

Other parents told Fox 46 Charlotte similar responses. Some parents did express concerns that high school athletes could face repercussions for participating that could hurt their chances in getting scholarships.
