CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - A pedestrian was struck and killed in the University area Friday morning.
Officers responded about 6 a.m. to a report of a pedestrian hit at Libby Way and Stetson Drive. They were pronounced dead on scene.
The pedestrian has been identified as 52-year-old George Lee Wingo. According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police, Wingo was crossing the northbound lanes of North Tryon Street when he was struck by a 2011 Camaro. The Camaro was in the far right lane and the driver attempted to stop when he saw the pedestrian.
Witnesses traveling in the center northbound lane tell detectives that they had to swerve around the pedestrian to avoid hitting him.
Police say the pedestrian was not crossing the road at a marked crosswalk and the collision happened before sunrise. Alcohol and speed are not contributing factors for the driver.
The northbound lanes of North Tryon Street at Stetson near Interstate 85 were shut down due to emergency vehicles in the area. North Tryon has since been reopened.
