80-year-old man struck, seriously hurt in wreck involving officer in south Charlotte

- An elderly man was taken to the hospital Thursday evening with serious injuries after a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer struck the man while he was crossing the road.

The accident happened at 6:15 p.m. Thursday, May 31 in the 11000 block of South Tryon Street near the intersection Moss Road.

CMPD Officer Jeffrey Page, who was in a marked patrol vehicle, was traveling south west on South Tryon Street when a pedestrian, identified as Arnulfo Salazar, 80, ran from the center median north across South Tryon and into the path of the police cruiser.

After impact, Officer Page stopped and began rendering aid until Medic arrived. Salazar was not within a marked crosswalk and was not wearing reflective clothing, police said.

At the time of the crash, witnesses said it was raining and traffic near the crash scene was light. Speed and alcohol are not contributing factors for Officer Page, police said.

Detectives are working to determine if impairment was a contributing factor for Salazar.
