CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - A pedestrian who was hit and killed by a driver in south Charlotte Monday afternoon has been identified.
83-year-old Ileana Barna was attempting to cross Pineville-Matthews Rd. at the intersection with Arboretum Dr. when she was struck by a car. The driver has been identified as David Earl Miller, 30.
Just before 4:00 p.m. on Monday, CMPD responded to the scene where they found Miller's 2000 Toyota Camry with front end damage and Barna lying in the road with critical life-threatening injuries.
The initial investigation revealed that Barna walked through the northeast lanes of Pineville-Matthews Rd. and was attempting to get through the three southwest lanes where Miller was driving when she was hit.
Barna was struck by the front left corner of the car and thrown to the ground. Miller stopped his car in the far right lane just beyond the intersection and immediately called 911.
She was transported to the hospital where she was pronounced dead at 4:26 p.m., according to police.
Reports indicate that there are no marked crosswalks or electronic pedestrian crossing signals to help pedestrians get across.
Police say excessive speed is not believed to be a contributing factor in this crash.
