HUNTERSVILLE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - A man walking along I-77 northbound in the construction zone near Huntersville was hit and killed by a car early Saturday morning.
The N.C. Highway Patrol says Jamie Lamont Allen, 43, of Charlotte, who was walking in the left lane of travel, was struck by a 2012 Honda Accord around 4:27 am near Gilead Rd, exit 23. He was pronounced dead on scene by Medic.
A front seat passenger in the Honda Accord was transported to CMC-Main with life threatening injuries after Allen was thrown onto the roof of the car causing the roof to cave in.
Troopers say they initially made contact with Allen around 1 am after finding him intoxicated and walking along I-77 in the construction zone. They requested Medic and Allen was transported to Novant Huntersville, where he was apparently released shortly afterwards.
Troopers say they're uncertain as to why Allen returned back to the interstate after being released from the hospital.
