11-year-old girl struck, killed while attempting to cross the road in west Charlotte

- Authorities say an 11-year-old girl died after being struck by a truck Wednesday evening in west Charlotte.

TyAsia Young was hit and killed by a driver as she and a young female relative were attempting to cross the 2300 block of West Boulevard, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police.

Officers said the children both crossed the eastbound lanes of West Boulevard. A Honda Ridgeline, driven by Janelle Garcia, struck the 11-year-old as she attempted to cross the street. The other young girl was not involved in the accident.

According to CMPD, Garcia was traveling west in the left lane of West Boulevard. As Garcia entered into the 2300 block, the young girl crossed the street in front of her vehicle and Garcia was unable to stop to avoid her.

Officers said the front of the Honda Ridgeline struck the young girl.

The 11-year-old was transported to CMC-Main with life threatening injuries. She was pronounced dead at 6:19 p.m. Wednesday as a result of the injuries sustained during the accident.

Police said Garcia stopped and remained on scene until officers arrived and she was not injured as a result of the accident.

The young girl was not crossing at an intersection or in a marked crosswalk when the accident occurred. Speed and alcohol use are not contributing factors, police said.

The CMPD Major Crash Investigation Unit responded to the scene and conducted the investigation.  Any person who witnessed the accident or has information about the case is asked to call Detective Sammis (704) 336-8862 or Crime Stoppers at (704) 334-1600.
