The Cabarrus County Sheriff's Office says it has a person of interest in custody for the rest area shooting that left a father of four paralyzed.
Darren Manuel, 26, is in custody and charged with attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon and assault with a deadly weapon.
Deputies say 43-year-old Greg McKee of Gastonia was shot at the rest stop and taken to the hospital for treatment.
The sheriff's office said McKee and his family stopped at a rest area Saturday evening near Dale Earnhardt Boulevard and Exit 60. McKee went inside while his family waited in the car.
As he washed his hands, McKee says two men approached him. They stood on each side of him, and one of the men showed a gun.
As McKee ran from the restroom, he was shot in the back. The two men ran away.
The family is relieved an arrest has been made in connection to the shooting.
The family's church started a GoFundMe page to help pay for hospital bills and personal expenses.
