Pineville Fire Dept. escort fallen brother to funeral home ahead of Saturday's service

The procession route for the memorial service to honor a fallen firefighter has been released.

It just so happens that the church where the memorial service is planned for fallen firefighter Richard Sheltra on Saturday is very close to Quail Hollow, the site of the PGA golf tournament also happening this weekend.

There will be two processions for the memorial service. The first procession will start at 11:15 a.m. Saturday running from McEwen Funeral home to Forest Hill Church down Park Road.

After the service, which starts at noon, the second procession will leave the church around 1 p.m. traveling through Pineville past the Pineville Volunteer Fire Department and then back to the funeral home.

According to officials, Sheltra's family asked for a smaller procession, which will also help with traffic around the PGA tournament.

Bill Suthard, who is acting as a spokesperson for the Pineville Fire Department said, “They (Sheltra’s family) don't want to impact that event--the PGA event, and I'm sure the PGA event doesn't want to impact us, so we're working very hard to make sure we can seamlessly pass through without causing any problems, and we're confident that is going to happen.”

Fire departments and first responders from departments across the Charlotte region plan to line the streets along the procession route in support of the fallen firefighter. Officials encourage the public to do the same.
