Plane departing CLT Airport forced to land

A plane departing Charlotte-Douglas International Airport Thursday was forced to turn around after just minutes in the sky - making a hard landing after an apparent malfunction.

It happened Thursday evening on United Airlines Skywest Flight 5711, which was leaving Charlotte en route to Chicago.

Eye witnesses say fire trucks surrounded the plane after it landed.

United told FOX46 it's inspecting what causes the mechanical issue. But those on the plane said the flaps on the wings failed.
