SHELBY, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - A 16-month-old girl was pronounced dead at the hospital after falling out of her grandmother's four-door truck Wednesday afternoon in Shelby, police said.
"She kept saying over and over I heard her open the door, I heard her open the door and at the point there was nothing more she could've done," said Sasha Beam, who was first on scene.
"It's a tragedy this has happened and I would like to give my condolences to the family. It was something that just happened that was a freak accident," said Michael Strong, an eyewitness.
At 3:24 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 27 officers were called to the intersection of S Dekalb Street and E Warren Street in reference to a child falling out of a truck.
Police tell FOX 46 Charlotte the 73-year-old grandmother was operating the vehicle when she says the little girl fell out of the back door while inside her car seat.
The little girl was transported to Cleveland Hospital where she was then airlifted to Charlotte. She was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The Shelby Police Department is currently investigating this case to determine if there's foul play. Currently, no arrests have been made in this case. They add a tragedy like this brings up an important reminder about children must be properly restrained at all times.
"This is a hard reminder to make sure these things are properly secured. We don't know what happen in this case but it does bring to light to importance of properly securing those car seats," said Shelby Police Chief, Jeff Ledford.
