Police charge suspect in south Charlotte murder

- Charlotte Mecklenburg Police have charged a suspect in a fatal shooting that took place in the parking lot of a south Charlotte apartment complex. 

Detectives identified Joel Miranda, 36, as a suspect in the murder of 23-year-old Pedro Fabricio Diaz-Paz. Diaz-Paz was found dead from a gunshot wound in a pickup truck in the parking lot of an apartment complex in the 1400 block of Beacon Ridge Dr. around 8:10 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 17.

An off-duty officer heard the shots being fired and ran out to the parking lot to investigate. He found Diaz-Paz in the truck and performed CPR, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene by MEDIC. 

Miranda was found in Virginia after he was taken into custody on multiple unrelated warrants. CMPD homicide detectives traveled to Virginia to interview Miranda, and subsequently charged him with murder. 

He will be placed in the custody of the Meckleburg County Sheriff's Office upon extradition. Officials say there is no timetable on his return.
