Police: Granddaughter and friend charged in elderly woman's death in Shelby

- The Shelby Police Department have arrested and charged a granddaughter and her friend with the killing of her 95-year-old grandmother.

A Shelby man was arrested Tuesday, June 7 on numerous charges after they said he killed the elderly woman. 

Officers said at 1:34 p.m. Tuesday they were called to 513 Woodside Drive in reference to a welfare check. 

Upon arrival, police were unable to get anyone to the door.

Officers made entry into the home and found Mildred Scarboro Blanton, 95, unresponsive. Cleveland County EMS responded to the scene and determined Blanton to be deceased. 

As a result of the investigation and through tips and information from the community, detectives charged Christopher Thomas Sizemore, 24, with First Degree Murder, Larceny of a Motor Vehicle, and First Degree Burglary in connection with this case.  

Detectives have also charged Blanton's granddaughter, Ashley Blanton Sanders, 46, for her involvement in this crime.  

Both suspects are being held in the Cleveland County Jail without bond. A first court appearance was scheduled for Wednesday morning, June 8.
