CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - Two sheriff's deputies were involved in a domestic-related incident in northeast Charlotte that left one of them dead, according to police.
Just after 4:00 p.m. Charlotte Mecklenburg police officers were called to the scene in the 13300 block of Ashley Meadow Dr. for a domestic violence assault with a deadly weapon.

Upon arrival, officers found a man, now identified as Deputy Sheriff James Hawkins, dead from an apparent gunshot wound. His wife, Deputy Sheriff Rabata Hawkins was also involved.
James had been with the sheriff's office since 2005. Rataba has been with them since 2005.
The Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office released a statement on the incident, saying:
The Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) is saddened to learn of the news concerning an open homicide investigation on Ashley Meadow Drive on Monday, January 15, 2018, involving two MCSO deputies. Deputy Sheriff Rataba Hawkins has been with MCSO since 2002 and is currently assigned to Field Operations. Her husband, the deceased, Deputy Sheriff James Hawkins had been with MCSO since 2005 and was assigned to Arrest Processing. Our hearts go out to their family as they cope and grieve with this tragedy. This is a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police investigation so any questions concerning the investigation should be directed to CMPD. Because the MCSO family grieves with the Hawkins family, we will have chaplains available for our staff.
There have been four murders in Charlotte this year and all of them have been domestic-related.
