Police looking for possible boyfriend at scene of mother, son death in Kings Mountain

Kings Mountain PD are looking to speak to a man believed to be the boyfriend of the mother and child hit and killed in a crash last week.

Officers were called out to N. Cansler Street at Barnette Drive around 4:56 a.m. on Thursday, July 21.

When officers arrived they found Clarissa Ussery, 30, and her 2-year-old son deceased. 

Ussery was in the middle of the roadway in the northbound lanes of North Cansler Street with her son when they were hit by a 1999 Dodge Truck heading north on Cansler Street driven by Dany Ray Cook, according to police.

Police say Cook hit Ussery and her son in his lane of travel. Cook hit his brakes and veered to the left side of the roadway crossing the center line in an attempt to miss Ussery and her son.

“It sounded like two cars hit head on and for me to come out my door and see it not but one car out here and two bodies laying in the street…it was devastating,” said a neighbor who wanted to remain anonymous.

The truck came to a rest in the south bound lanes of North Cansler Street with Ussery's body underneath the driver side of the truck.

Cook witnessed a man at the scene of the accident come from the right side of North Cansler Street and demand that he back up his truck, which he did while trying to avoid running back over Ussery, according to police. 

Police say Cook said he saw the man pick up what he thought was a black book bag and place it beside Ussery then run away North on Cansler Street.

After investigating police believe that the man picked up the body of Ussery's son and placed it beside her. The unknown man is believed to have been Ussery's boyfriend, Eric Odems.

Alcohol, speed and cell phone usage was not a determining factor, according to police.
