Police officer, military veteran credited with saving man's life

- A man trying to fix his SUV ended up nearly getting crushed after an accident. Now, an East Spencer police officer is being praised for his quick thinking and action that saved the man’s life.

Officer Willie Spencer was called to an accident on North Long St. Wednesday morning. When he arrived 51-year-old William Wright was trapped underneath his Cadillac Escalade.

“He stepped out his vehicle, went underneath his vehicle to see what was going on. While he was underneath, another vehicle came up behind him, struck the back of his vehicle causing that vehicle to drop on him,” said Officer Spencer.

Spencer was two blocks away when he got the call. He arrived and immediately grabbed a jack from the back of Wright’s truck and started cranking it to free him. He said passersby ran to help, pulling Wright out from under the SUV.

“This guy he was in pain so natural instincts kicked in and I knew I had to get him out of the vehicle.”

Spencer is a military veteran, a former corrections officer and now a police officer in East Spencer, he also works part-time as a transit officer in Charlotte.

“You know it feels good you know to help out another human being. I mean that’s what we do. We put this uniform on every day, not knowing if we’re going to make it home to our loved ones but it’s the price we’re willing to pay.”

Police Chief Sharon Hovis said she wants the community to know that they are a family and the department has their backs.

“There’s nothing more endearing than a good day like today where someone was helped and someone was saved and one of our officers was able to be a part of that,” said Chief Hovis.

FOX 46 Charlotte asked Spencer if this incident would stick with him and he replied, “It will, it will. Like I said I helped a fellow human being, he’s alive, he can lie to see another day. It’s a good day, it’s a good day.”

Wright was taken to a hospital in Wake Forrest. Officers said, he did not suffer any major injuries and is expected to be okay. The driver that struck Wright’s vehicle was not injured, she was issued a citation.

Officer Spencer said he hopes one day he can meet the man whose life he helped save.
