Police officer shoots suspect in Kannapolis

- A local police officer shot a person they're calling a suspect, according to the chief of police with the Kannapolis Police Department.

The incident happened Friday afternoon, April 28 at the Clover Leaf Plaza in Kannapolis. The suspect was taken to a nearby hospital.

"We were just passing through, trying to cut through here to go to a talent show and then all hell breaks loose," Rob Stanton said.

Stanton described the frantic scene from his car Friday afternoon.

"It was pretty intense, a lot of people screaming and yelling," he said. "They confronted him and there was a brief struggle and the suspect and the officer...this was gunfire between the two and the suspect was shot and no officer was injured."

According to Kannapolis police, the officers were serving a warrant for a probation violation.

"The suspect was a probation misconduct out of Rowan County and we received information from the county that he was located in this area, and the officers located his vehicle and when they went into the hotel they encountered him."

The chief added this type of situation can happen anywhere. As for Stanton, he believes this was no coincidence.

"This is just the bad side of the streets. It's Friday, Saturday night you can imagine what walks the streets," he said.

The suspect is in the hospital recovering. Police say the SBI is now handling the investigation.
