ROCK HILL, SC (FOX 46 WJZY) - A Rock Hill mother has been charged after police said she left her baby at a shelter alone without food and went to a birthday party.
Officers were called to the shelter on Saturday, July 28 in reference to a 6 to 8-month-old infant, who was left without care.
The 911 caller told police the mother, Shannon Nicole Ward, 31, left her baby around 2 p.m. and went to a birthday party, which was being held for her other child. The 911 caller told officers she had been trying to contact Ward for awhile.
When the caller finally did get a hold of Ward, she said she was coming back at 5 p.m. She had left her child without baby wipes or formula.
Police said the 911 caller is a life-coach at the shelter, and her responsibility isn't watching after the children of its tenants. Officers were able to call Ward on the phone and she replied stating, "She was not going to disappoint one child, for another."
Once officers told Ward she needed to come back, she became irate and hung up.
Ward did not return to the shelter until 5:09 p.m. Saturday. She was then taken into custody by police and charged with unlawful conduct towards a child.
