Police: Two arrested after shooting at passing cars, watching objects ablaze while drinking

- Two men were arrested this week after firing shots at passing vehicles while watching objects burn in their yard and drinking beer, deputies said. 

On Tuesday, Sept. 19 deputies with the Iredell County Sheriff''s Office were called to a home located along Blackwelder Road in reference to 'shots fired at a passing vehicle'. 

Upon arrival, deputies located two men in the yard drinking beer, watching a lawnmower and a vehicle fully engulfed in flames. 

Deputies were told by Bobby Messer Jr. that he had a gun in his pocket which corroborated the story of the reporting driver. Following a brief discussion about what had taken place Messer Jr. and Jimmy Messer were both arrested.

Messer Jr. has been charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon for having shot at the passing drivers. Messer was arrested for resist, obstruct, and delay for his conduct during the investigation. During his detention Messer slipped free from handcuffs and was hindering the investigation, deputies said. 

The investigation was taking place while the fire burned in the yard which added hazards for all responders.

Both men were taken into custody and transported to Iredell County Detention center where Bobby Messer Jr was given a $5,000 secured bond for two counts of assault with a deadly weapon. Jimmy Messer was released on a $5,000 unsecured bond for resisting, obstructing and delaying the investigation.

Messer reportedly walked back to his home at 3:49 a.m. Wednesday and set his residence on fire. He was transported to Iredell memorial Hospital for treatment. Deputies confirmed that Messer was the owner of the property and no charges have been filed at this time for burning his home.
