Protest in uptown Saturday turns violent

- A peaceful political protest hosted by pro-Trump supporters in uptown Saturday afternoon turned violent.

The protest, organized by Deplorable Pride, a pro-Trump political organization, took place at the corner of Trade & Tryon Streets shortly before noon. In a Facebook post, the group said the purpose of the protest was to show their disapproval of city Councilwoman Lawana Mayfield and other democratic city leaders.

The protest quickly turned violent due to actions by the opposition. Two arrests were made by CMPD during the event.

Brian Talbert, 48, founder of Deplorable Pride, was arrested and charged with assault on a female. Prior to his arrest, someone on the opposing side assaulted him with pepper spray. He did not require medical attention.

Ryan Joseph Dugan, 24, was arrested and charged with damage to personal property.

No other incidents were reported to police relating to the protest.
