CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - Imagine your car being repossessed, then wrecked, only to find out the repo company took the wrong car.
On August 15, Debra Demmery said she parked her car in an Innovation Park parking deck where she works off University Boulevard in north Charlotte. She went inside for the day and when she came back, her car was gone.
She called 311 for help.
"They said, 'Your car has been repoed, we can't help you.," Demmery said.
The repo company, National Asset Recovery based in Denver, NC, took the wrong car. Apparently Demmery's vehicle looked like one they were supposed to repossess, but they didn't check the VIN number.
To make matters worse, Demmery's car was significantly damaged. She claims it came from a repo worker, specifically, the one who wrongfully took her car.
"Their tow driver put it in emergency neutral and the car rolled into the back of the tow truck," she said.
Demmery filed a police report. Then she was hit the with bill: $7,270.62.
Two weeks went by with N.A.R not paying for the damage, So David Sentendrey went to ask, "Why?"
"I don't want to pay three-times what it should cost," owner Marcus Potter said.
Potter said the estimate Demmery received was significantly higher than what he believed it should cost.
"Regardless, we're going to take care of this lady, any way shape or form that we need to," Potter said.
FOX 46 Charlotte was given an itemized list of damages and costs from Service King in Matthews, where Demmery had her vehicle towed.
Roughly two weeks after FOX 46 Charlotte visited N.A.R., the owner paid the amount that Demmery was quoted.
N.A.R. said it had always planned on taking care of the problem. Demmery said the repo company was being vague and avoiding her until FOX 46 Charlotte got involved.
"I'll always be grateful to FOX [46 Charlotte] and [David Sentendrey] because I would have never got this far without either party being involved," Demmery said.
